On Richigenstrasse in the municipality of Worb, the Naturnetz association was commissioned by the municipality to build a dry stone wall. The wall was built at the foot of a species-rich meadow.
The dry stone wall is not only a fascinating example of traditional craftsmanship, but also an important ecological element. This special type of stone wall was built without the use of mortar or cement. The stones were carefully worked with a hammer and chisel. The wall gets its stability from its own weight. This type of construction has a long history and is a valuable testimony to times gone by.
The dry stone wall has a high ecological value and provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. It serves as a habitat and source of food for various species that often find it difficult to find suitable habitats in our modern landscape. The dry stone wall creates niches and crevices that provide ideal living conditions for many insects, reptiles and plants. One of these is the mortar bee, a wild bee species that finds nesting places in the hollows of the wall. The sand lizard, a protected reptile species, uses the wall as a place to bask in the sun and to raise its young. The cymbalum, a rare plant species, finds ideal conditions for its growth in the cracks in the dry stone wall.
The dry stone wall was built over a period of two weeks by community service workers. During construction, the existing invasive neophytes in the area were also removed.
