area development
brings nature back into public spaces

When gray areas are transformed into vibrant habitats, it's not just nature that benefits. Connected ecosystems provide animals and plants with space to live—and people with places to marvel, discover, and breathe deeply.

Which areas can be developed?

Measures

With these measures, every area is transformed into a natural oasis

  • Soil modelling & ruderal areas – removal of topsoil, installation of wall gravel or sand lenses for specialised plants and insects.

  • Small structures – piles of branches and stones, dry stone walls or dead wood create refuges for reptiles, small mammals and insects.

  • Seeding & Planting – Wildflower meadows, hedges and native shrubs provide diversity and food for pollinators and birds.

  • Waters & wetlands – Ponds, temporary pools or toad baths provide spawning grounds for amphibians and habitat for dragonflies.

  • Nesting aids – insect hotels and bird boxes complement natural structures and create safe breeding sites.

  • Unsealing & upgrading – asphalt paths or areas are unsealed and transformed into permeable, natural paths.

  • Visitor guidance – Stepping stones, paths or walkways enable nature experiences while protecting sensitive areas.

Why enhance areas close to nature

  • Ecological : new habitats, more biodiversity, better connectivity.

  • For biodiversity : stable populations, habitat for specialized species.

  • For communities: visible improvement of areas, positive townscape.

  • For the population : experiencing nature on their doorstep, educational and awareness-raising effect.
