Wildbeen Nesting Aid Sonnenberg
In order to promote wild bees, it is fundamentally necessary to create and maintain their habitats. This means that it is very important to promote the food and nesting options of the approximately 600 species found here. In addition to creating sand bunkers or edges in the garden for rarer species of wild bees, such as those that nest in the ground, it can be useful in residential areas to offer artificial nesting aids in the right location. Stadtwerk Winterthur manages the area around many of its infrastructure buildings according to ecological principles, so that lush flowering meadows and ruderal areas have been created in many locations.
This was also the case at the Sonnenberg transformer station, where we had the opportunity to install a wild bee nesting aid on the edge of a ruderal area.
Since the nesting aid must be stable, a foundation was first built. In order to obtain a flat, horizontal surface, the foundation head was covered with formwork panels after the foundation had been excavated. We were then able to fill the foundation with concrete and level the surface with a spirit level and trowel. After the concrete had hardened, the formwork was removed and the wooden frame prefabricated in our workshop could be firmly installed. We then filled the infills in the wooden frame with various materials such as reed stalks, interlocking tiles and wooden blocks of various diameters drilled into the side. Finally, we installed the roof to protect it from moisture.
