Another project in the vineyard of the Strasser organic winegrower family in Oberstammheim was realized in December 2019 by the Northeastern Switzerland Nature Network. As part of the 100xZürichNatur campaign by the nature conservation organization Birdlife Zurich, another dry stone wall was built in the Hängstbüel vineyard. Local limestone from the canton of Zurich was selected for this project. The stones from the Lägern quarry near Dielsdorf are characterized by their great hardness and durability. In addition, they have been laid in a flat or wild manner, which gives the wall a unique appearance. In connection with the rough backing, the ecological value also increases enormously because many small animals such as sand lizards, slowworms and insect species find a place to hide in the joints, cracks and crevices. In order to ensure the stability of the wall over several decades, the civil servants, all of whom were laymen, had to follow a few important rules: The wall must always stand on a compacted gravel foundation so that it can always accommodate slight movements. The stones may only be placed in such a way that no crosses are created in the joint pattern, the so-called cross joints. In addition, sufficiently large stones must be placed across the wall in the backing as so-called binding stones. All this leads to a compact, heavy structure that will last for many years. After the long neophyte season, this project was a great success for the Strassers.

Zivis one of the highlights of the year.
