Deployed throughout Switzerland and staying in different accommodation every week from mid-May to the end of August. What sounds attractive requires a certain degree of flexibility not only in terms of operational planning but also in terms of the volunteers. The biggest motivational challenge here is the realization that the positive effect of our work will only be noticeable in the following year or even in the long term: giving rare native animals and plants in our cultural landscape a real chance of survival! This is often not only unspectacular but also really exhausting at first! Is it worth the effort? We think so - and not just because of the many beautiful sunsets!
Our main focus was on gravel pits and quarries, where many highly specialized animal and plant species from formerly dynamic landscapes now find a last refuge. Unfortunately, many unwanted exotic species - so-called invasive neophytes - also feel at home in these replacement habitats. Gravel pit and quarry owners, who are aware of their responsibility for these valuable places of refuge, are happy about the commitment of our Naturnetz-Mobil community service team.
Neophyte management in the gravel pits can preserve or promote important habitats. Rare pioneer species such as the yellow-bellied toad and the natterjack toad in particular find ideal conditions here. But more common species such as grass and water frogs, common toads and various newt species also use this habitat. Even highly specialized and endangered bird species such as the sand martin or the little ringed plover can be promoted here.
