At the end of November 2020, there was another operation in the "Großes Moos", an area between the three lakes of Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten. This time we spent two weeks doing intensive hedge maintenance near Ins.
Between the fields of an organic vegetable farmer and the main canal lies the leased land of a farmer who cultivates the property sustainably and carefully with his highland cattle and goats. There are hedges on these areas that had become overgrown and partly grown together before we intervened.
In order to restore the hedges, we had to cut pollard willows, remove tall trees, define hedge shapes (promote thorny plants), create small structures and remove clematis and blackberries. After hard work and a few thorns later, places have been created again in the cool season that make it easier for many species to find shelter and food, to recover and hopefully also to reproduce between vegetable fields, roads, air traffic and local recreation areas. In addition to the whitethroat, red-backed shrike and corn bunting, numerous amphibians and insects also depend on precisely these spaces.
