Ecological upgrade at Mythenquai – new habitats in the heart of Zurich
Realized:
2025
carried out by:
Naturnetz Mittelland
Realized:
Mythenquai, Zürich, Schweiz
Problem:
The green spaces along the tennis courts at Mythenquai were intensively used lawns with no ecological value. Structurally diverse habitats for insects, reptiles, and birds were almost completely absent.
Measure:
The nature conservation network transformed twelve sections of land into species-rich ruderal and structural areas. This involved removing topsoil, creating sand lenses, constructing a 10.5-meter-long dry stone wall, and building piles of branches and stones. Planting and sowing with site-appropriate seeds were also carried out.
Method:
Peeling off the turf, modeling with wall gravel, building the dry stone wall, installing stepping stones and rope fences for visitor guidance, sowing and planting.
Result:
New small-scale structures, flowering areas, and water features enrich the site. Visitors can explore the areas via stepping stones, while sensitive areas remain protected.
Ecological added value:
The area now provides habitat for wild bees, grasshoppers, sand lizards, and birds. The combination of ruderal areas, dry stone walls, and small-scale structures creates a stable mosaic of valuable biotopes in the heart of Zurich.
What's next:
The areas will be regularly maintained in the future. Dry stone walls, small-scale structures, and plantings will be preserved and are intended to develop into an urban biodiversity hotspot in the long term.
