Toad tubs: Natural spawning grounds for amphibians

Background and meaning

Since 1850, over 90% of Switzerland's wetlands have been lost, significantly impacting biodiversity. Amphibians, especially the endangered yellow-bellied toad ( Bombina variegata ), depend on temporary bodies of water to ensure their reproductive cycle. Drainage and the silting up of existing water bodies are increasingly depriving them of suitable habitats.

The solution: Toad tubs

Naturnetz Eternit toad ponds are the ideal solution for promoting yellow-bellied toads and smooth newts. These artificial ponds are robust, durable, and watertight. Thanks to their light weight, they are easy to transport and can be used almost anywhere. Their organic shape blends perfectly into the surroundings while allowing easy entry and exit.

Applications and successes

In spring 2023, 35 toad pools were installed at eight locations in the canton of Zug alone, including 20 pools for the Cham Landscape Habitat Association. The collaboration between farmers, community service workers and local authorities led to the successful creation of new micro-water bodies. The results are impressive: the newly created pools provide valuable spawning grounds for yellow-bellied toads and contribute to the preservation of their population.

Installation and maintenance

A toad pool is installed at ground level to make it easier for amphibians to access. At the same time, exit aids are integrated so that animals can safely get out again. Maintenance includes regular emptying and cleaning to prevent silting up and keep the water attractive for amphibians.

Ecological added value

  • Promoting biodiversity: The small bodies of water create habitats not only for amphibians, but also for insects and other small creatures.

  • Climate adaptation: Temporary bodies of water store water and help make the landscape more resilient to droughts.

  • Sustainability: Thanks to the reusability and durability of the tubs, effective amphibian conservation is ensured in the long term.

Conclusion

With each newly created pond, we come one step closer to preserving amphibian populations and make an important contribution to biodiversity. For more information or to start your own toad pond project with us, contact the Naturnetz !
