Braggio, located high in the Calanca Valley Regional Park, is accessible only by a small cable car. It's a remote world of impressive scenery, traditional mountain pastures, and sparse larch forests. These characteristic landscapes have been kept open for centuries by grazing and timber harvesting. Today, they are valuable habitats for rare species such as the capercaillie, the citrinth, and special orchids. But this biodiversity is threatened—particularly by scrub encroachment due to declining land use.
The project will preserve two valuable habitats:
First, there's the open larch forest, where lower branches are removed and young, unwanted trees are pruned through so-called branch pruning. This preserves the typical open forest structure, which provides habitat for many specialized species.
On the other hand, adjacent dry meadows and pastures are being cleared of bushes – especially young birch and hazel bushes are being removed so that weakly competitive, light-loving plant species can continue to thrive.
