The Maggia Valley boasts one of the wildest floodplain landscapes in Switzerland, with extensive gravel banks and natural floodplain forests. The intense flow of the Maggia River constantly creates new habitats. This dynamic makes the floodplain a valuable home for many different animal and plant species. However, this idyllic landscape is being disrupted by invasive neophytes, which, through their widespread spread, displace native species and threaten local biodiversity. This project focuses in particular on combating the Chinese palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), also incorrectly known as the Ticino palm. This species, originally from East Asia, was introduced as an ornamental plant in Belle Epoque gardens in Ticino in the 19th century. Thanks to their resilience, even to very low temperatures, these palms were able to establish themselves in the forests of Ticino. The spread of the palm poses a problem because, by colonizing large areas, it hinders the natural regeneration of the forest and leads to the impoverishment of the undergrowth. Their large, fan-shaped leaves prevent light from reaching the soil and thus the other native species, while the shallow roots compromise soil stability. Only through constant and repeated control of this kind can the forest's natural flora regenerate, and young, native trees have a chance to grow and thrive. Every bit of help counts!
