Welcome to an unforgettable day in the beautiful Schelten Pass Mountains in the Bernese Jura! But we're not just here to admire the beauty of this area. We're here to actively contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. With combined efforts and many helping hands, we'll be clearing certain areas of bracken. In this way, we're not only protecting rare species but also preserving the unique landscape of the Bernese Jura for future generations.
The bracken fern ( Pteridium aquilinum ) is found in the Jura mainly outside of forests. This includes the dry meadows and pastures of national importance in Schelten (canton of Bern). On fallow, poorly fertile grasslands, the fern can spread and gradually cover large areas. Other species can no longer thrive in dense stands. Under optimal growing conditions, this fern reaches a height of up to three meters! Due to its toxicity, it is not eaten by grazing animals, which further facilitates its spread.
Together we can curb the growth of the bracken fern and thus have a positive impact on this special area!
